Reflecting on The Great War
Yesterday, June 28, marked the 100th anniversary of the assassination of the Archduke of Austria Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie in Sarajevo, the event that triggered the first World War.
Between 1914 and 1918 when the armistice was signed, ending what was also known as The Great War, 14 million people were killed — 5 million civilians and 9 million soldiers — including sailors and airmen from 28 countries, and at least 7 million troops were permanently disabled.
Today, we present a few photos of the fighting that has been described as unprecedented in scope and savagery.
