AFTER 16 years at the Hot 102 FM radio station, broadcaster/musicologist Bunny Goodison and

his popular Rhythms programme have moved on.

Goodison told the Sunday Observer that he left the station last month, citing “a number of issues” for his reason to leave. He declined to give details for his departure.

“All I can say is that I never had the inspiration to work there anymore. The enthusiasm just wasn’t there,” he said.

Goodison hosted Rhythms in the 5:00-9:00 pm slot on Sundays. Its ska, rocksteady and classic Rhythm and blues format catered to a mature audience.

The show first aired in 1989 on the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation’s JBC FM where it aired until 1997 when it moved briefly to Radio Jamaica. Rhythms first aired on Hot 102 FM in September 1998.

Goodison says he is in discussion with “interested parties” to produce Rhythms and hopes to be back on radio soon.

A former football player for St George’s College and Jamaica, Goodison got involved in music professionally in 1964 when he started the Soul Shack sound system. The connections he formed with musicians and producers from the 1960s and 1970s was the foundation for Rhythms which has become a staple on Jamaican radio.
