Falmouth mayor schedules meeting to address filthy town
FALMOUTH, Trelawny — MAYOR of Falmouth Councillor Garth Wilkinson has scheduled a meeting for today with representatives of several Government agencies to address drain-cleaning, garbage removal and other issues dogging the historic resort town.
The decision was reached following Monday’s ‘walk of the town’ by the mayor, accompanied by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, representatives from the National Solid Waste Management Agency, the Trelawny Public Health Department and other stakeholders.
Members of the group were particularly concerned about the dumping of waste in the Drag Line and a large pile-up of garbage along a section of Water Lane.
The Observer West understands that the Drag Line, which is inundated with solid waste from premises along Wakeland Drive, is to undergo a massive cleaning exercise, expected to cost $10 million.
During the tour, there were also expressions for the need to have dialogue with the Wakeland Drive residents in an effort to curtail the dumping of waste in the “Draggy”.
Earlier this month, Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment Dr Wykeham McNeill announced a $162-million beautification project for the town of Falmouth, which will complement a $500-million project to establish a complex at the Hampden Wharf.
The planned wharf project is expected to provide vending space for craft vendors and a range of entertainment facilities.
