The Guv, Semper Fidelis for today’s co-features
A $715,000 Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association of Jamaica Trophy will share the spotlight with the Bowden Estate Ltd Overnight Allowance call on a local Breeders Day nine-race card at Caymanas Park today.
The Thoroughbred Owners & Breeders Association call, set among Restricted Allowance II native-bred three-year-olds (NW2) has attracted 10 runners going 1,400 metres. It is a race that is primed with a number of promising three-year-olds and is slated to go to post at approximately 4:45 pm with first post at 1:10 pm.
Earlier, the Bowden Estate Ltd Overnight Allowance dash for three-year-olds and upward, a race in which last year’s 2000 Guineas winner Willie Goldsmith will embrace another attempt to return to the winner’s enclosure since his Classic win, has attracted eight runners going 1,100 metres at approximately 2:10 pm.
Willie Goldsmith, to be ridden by Paul Francis, is weighted to open his four-year-old career success after four outings. But this field is no pushover and although the fairly consistent son of Traditional will be reporting well prepared to face his rivals, he may just have to await an easier opportunity.
Some of his rivals include Street Dancer, a filly prepared for racing by the champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta. After five races Street Dancer has only lost once and that was in to Queen Paula the 1,000 Guineas.
And she will also come in at 51.0kg for the title-chasing Dick Cardenas.
Then there is Campesino from the stables of Philip Feanny. Although seeming to be just going through the motion in his four-year-old debut race, the bay gelded son of Compadre looked lively in his exercise gallops and being a lover of the trip he will play a major part in the outcome, especially with jockey Percy Williams astride.
However, with the down-in-grade The Guv in the line-up and champion jockey Dane Nelson in the saddle the competitiveness of this race deepens as even at the ripe age of eight, he is no pushover for any of these.
It is a trip that he truly loves and there is sufficient speed in the race to lay a cushion platform for him to strike with deadly accuracy in the closing stages.
