Baseball in Treasure Beach
SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Former professional baseball player and collegiate coach, Eddie Rose held a three-day baseball clinic for youngsters in the Treasure Beach community recently.
Fundamental skills in throwing, catching, fielding, hitting and base running were taught, a news release said.
“One of the skill areas that I was very pleased to see in the majority of the ballplayers was their ability to hit the ball consistently, and for power,” said Rose.
“Hitting is probably the most difficult skill to teach, but these young Treasure Beach baseball players showed a high level of hand-eye coordination. Players adjusted easily to the throw of the ball, as swinging the bat came very natural to them.
“I attest that to the fact that some of them have played cricket previously, furthermore solidifying the concept that baseball should be an easy transition here in Jamaica …” said Rose.
He also had high praise for two volunteer coaches Perry Rowe (Junction) and Garry Williams (Treasure Beach).
At the end of the baseball clinic, Rose presented both coaches with autographed baseballs and handed out baseball hats and jerseys to the players. Baseball gears were left with the coaches to ensure there is continued practice.
