Football for wellness
MANDEVILLE, Manchester — The Carnegie Foundation for Cancer Research in partnership with the UK-based Kits4Causes, Northern Caribbean University (NCU) and the Manchester Football Association recently hosted a week of football workshops and activities on the NCU campus here.
According to a news release, Football Focus 2014: Football — A Vehicle For Wellness, was conducted free of cost by 11 UK-based football coaches certified by the English Football Association.
They sought to encourage best practices in sports delivery such as emergency first aid, child protection, good nutrition, role of the coach and the responsibilities of players, coaches and parents, the release said.
The activities sought to underline the Kits4Causes philosophy that the “potential for social development through football is endless” and that “football can bring about positive change, regardless of cultural barriers and can break through prejudice and provide real and sustained development”.
Kits4Causes is said to have worked extensively in the United Kingdom and Africa among other places and donated over 28,000 football kits in 34 countries.
Launched in 2007, The Carnegie Foundation for Cancer Research’s main purpose is that of sourcing funds primarily for cancer research. All funds to date have been donated to Northern Caribbean University’s Cancer Research Unit in their Department of Research & Grants. In addition, in the past, the Foundation has donated equipment and supplies to NCU’s Nursing & Medical Technology Departments, the Health Service and Division of Student Services as well as to the Southern Regional Authority, Ministry of Health, Mandeville Regional and Percy Junor hospitals, the news release said.
