El Poderoso for Saint Cecelia Cup
Horse Racing, Sports
BY HURBUN WILLIAMS Observer writer
August 15, 2014

El Poderoso for Saint Cecelia Cup

THE inaugural running of the Saint Cecelia Cup will headline a well supported 10-race card sponsored by O &S Tack Room at Caymanas Park today.

Set among Open Allowance three-year-olds and upward, and going 1,300 metres for a purse of $786,500 at the penultimate stage of the programme, the Saint Cecelia is carded to go to post at approximately 4:30 pm with first post at 12:15 pm.

The Saint Cecelia will pay worthy tribute to the two-time Horse-Of-The-Year who, in a racing career that spanned four years, realised 24 victories from 37 career starts. A very dynamic field of nine runners that include Saint Cecelia’s former stable mates Go Go Yvonne and The Guv trained by Spencer Chung will line up for the event.

Other heavyweight runners in the line-up are El Poderoso and Bubbling Angeline, conditioned by Philip Feanny, the surprising Fantabulous trained by Ryan Darby, Mr Von and New Kingston prepared for racing by the champion and leading trainer Wayne DaCosta, who is on the verge of joining Feanny on becoming the trainers with the most Championship wins of 14 each at Caymanas Park.

The field is completed by Edison trained by Richard Azan and Eastwood conditioned by Gary Subratie.

Looking at a possible winner, El Poderoso, the mount of champion jockey Dane Nelson looks all set to recoup losses after his narrow defeat to stable mate Bubbling Angeline on last.

To gain success though while still carrying the big weight El Poderoso will definitely have to overcome his recent conqueror, the bubbling three-year-old filly Bubbling Angeline to be again ridden by Percy Williams, and the back up in grade six-year-old imported mare, Go Go Yvonne.

Coming off a recent good win in the lower grade going 1,400 metres, the stretch-running mare has much in her favour at the weights and was quite fluent at exercise in her preparation. Added to this, jockey Shane Ellis has replaced Dane Nelson in the irons.

That may just be a wise choice by the rider as the five-year-old chestnut son of Even The Score out of Color Her Gone (War) might have felt so well under him after setting down for the drive and, now travelling another 100 metres farther, may just be what the doctor ordered for El Poderso to return to the winner’s enclosure for the third time this season after 14 starts.
