JDF march on Kingston in JCA Senior Cup decider
THE 2014 Jamaica Cricket Association (JCA) Senior Cup title will be decided this weekend when former champions Kingston CC battle Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) in the final at Sabina Park, starting today.
Play is scheduled to commence at 10:00 am on each day of the two-day encounter.
JDF, who last won the title a decade ago, have been the in-form team of the tournament, topping Group C in the preliminary phase and going on to record 10-wicket and nine-wicket victories in respective quarter-final and semi-final contests with Westmoreland CA and last year’s champions Melbourne CC.
The JDF bowlers have done well this season and they will be given an added boost with the return of national left-arm pacer Sheldon Cotterell, after his spell in the Caribbean Premier League with Antigua Hawksbills. JDF also have left-arm wrist spinner Dennis Bulli.
The soldiers’ batting has been led by left-hander Rasheed Outar, who has notched three centuries in the tournament so far. He missed out on a fourth, when he was dismissed for 98 in the first innings of the semis.
“I think JDF have the perfectly balanced team and we have everything we need in the batting. We have a very good bowling attack. The confidence is high and pretty much I think we have the title, but we just have to work for it,” said JDF team manager Captain Aubyn Sibblies.
Ray Wynter, the manager of Kingston CC, was equally assertive when he spoke to the Jamaica Observer.
“I feel very confident and I think the youngsters have done very well this season. I think they will continue in the same vein and be victorious. We have a good all-round team,” said the former Kingston CC and Jamaica fast bowler.
Kingston, who last copped the Senior Cup trophy in 2001, topped Zone D before comfortably beating St Ann CA by six wickets in the quarter-finals. In last week’s semi-finals, they were commanding and ruthless in securing first innings honours in the drawn encounter with Manchester CA.
Young batsman Brandon King, who hit a century against Manchester, Brian Clarke and Garth Garvey are expected to lead Kingston’s batting.
In the bowling department, Kingston are expected to rely on fast bowler Fabian Forbes, as well as left-arm spinners Paul Harrison and Patrick Harty.
