Design Jamaica Collections (Part 2)
It’s take-two with designer looks at the inaugural staging of Design Jamaica Fashion Showcase, the brainchild of Summer Jarrett and Simone Neilson, with a view to spotlight designers on the verge. AW Fashion wraps up our two-part recap with the remaining four designers — Jarrett’s KAJ line, Miakalani, One Summer and YC by James Black.
YC by James Black
For her 15-piece collection celebrating Caribbean culture and “the woman dressing for the summertime”, Yahdie Conscious (YC) designer James Black incorporated the African and tribal prints she’s known to gravitate to, as well as stark white pieces for a resortwear line that featured bikinis, daytime dresses, pants and flowing cropped tops.
KAJ by Summer Jarrett
“The collection is named Drama Queen”, designer Summer Jarrett told AW Fashion, post-show. “It celebrates the ambitious, successul woman who loves to dress up and put on a show when she goes out.”
For her Design Jamaica outing, the 19-year-old frontwoman of the KAJ design line, who debuted her first collection at her ‘Sweet 16’ birthday at Fiction nightclub, presented white selections adorned rhinestones, colour-block pieces, all reflecting youthful vivacity.
ONE SUMMER
Dane and Dominic Summers unveiled their One Summer lifestyle brand collection of resortwear to a receptive audience of fashion watchers. The brothers, who shuttle between homes in Miami and Kingston, presented a line of island-chic threads perfect for leisurely trips to the beach or out of town. Coming soon, Dane divulged to AW, a One Summer accessory line with a full range of wooden, bamboo and acetate sunglasses.
MIAKALANI
Self-taught designer Brittany Johnson is not one given to procrastination. She designed her first dress two years ago on a whim, and after garnering positive feeback from family and friends, made the choice to follow her creative passion. For the Miakalani swimwear collection she showed last weekend, Johnson stuck with bright colours and patterned palettes, all featuring her signature open backs.
