NFL kicks off in shadow of Ray Rice saga

IT was certainly an eventful Week One, on and off the field.

You can always count on the NFL to deliver tons of fodder for interesting anecdotes, and the opening week did not disappoint. But even during a week that featured a plethora of upsets on the field, it was the unfortunate Ray Rice saga off the field that grabbed the headlines. The former pro bowl running back, now embroiled in a domestic abuse controversy, has since been released by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely from the league. And if that wasn’t enough, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has come under even more fire for his office’s complacency and lack of action throughout the whole ordeal. The story just keeps getting more and more embarrassing for those involved. It sends a strong message to players reminding them of the harsh consequences that await the perpetrators of domestic violence, but it also paints a very bad picture of the league administration and in particular Mr Goodell, whose very job as Commissioner could be in jeopardy. But ’nuff said, let’s turn our attention to the events on the field.

The week began on Thursday night with the season opener between the Green Bay Packers and the reigning Super Bowl Champs — those monsters of the great Pacific Northwest — the Seattle Seahawks. It ended the way we predicted it would (except for Andre Hutchinson), with Seattle totally dominating the Packers on offence and defence and trouncing them 36-16 to easily cover the 6.5 point JustBet point spread. The Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch was in his ‘beast’ mode, cutting up the hapless Packer defence with his up-the-gut running and, as usual, QB Russell Wilson was efficient in managing the game. I’ll say it again: the Seahawks could go all the way.

Here are some of the upsets I alluded to earlier on. Miami Dolphins 33, New England Patriots 20. Hello?! Didn’t anyone tell the Dolphins that the Patriots are the favourites to win the AFC East? Apparently not. The Dolphins’ running game lead by Knowshon Moreno was impressive with him racking up 134 yards. Just as impressive was the Dolphins’ defence, knocking down Tom Brady 10 times and keeping New England scoreless in the second half. There were some close games among the upsets that bear mentioning, no pun intended. The Chicago Bears got beaten 23-20 by the Buffalo Bills and, in another close game, the Atlanta Falcons nipped the much-touted-to-win-the-NFC South, the New Orleans Saints, 37-34 in overtime.

Monday night football kicked off with a double-header as the Detroit Lions took on the New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals took on the San Diego Chargers. The Lions mauled the Giants, whipping them 35-14. In the process they made veteran QB Eli Manning, look like a rookie instead of a guy who has two Super Bowl rings to his credit. The other game was a close contest with the eventual winners, the Arizona Cardinals, beating the San Diego Chargers 18-17. This was the grand finale to an eventful week. We saw our new tipster, Mark Archer, being the ‘lead dawg’ for Week One, with a respectable 9-7 record. Peter Lindo went 8-8, yours truly went 7-9 and Andre Hutchinson went 5-11. Let’s see how we all do in Week Two.

Last night on Thursday Night Football, the Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens met in what has to be seen as a must-win situation for the Ravens. It should have been a good game as the Ravens, with all the off-the-field distractions, certainly wouldn’t want to fall to 0-2. As far as Sunday’s must-see match-ups are concerned, Miami at Buffalo should be a keenly contested affair, so should Atlanta at Cincinnati, the Bears at 49ers and also the Eagles at the Colts on Monday Night Football. You can check all our picks below.
