NEW YORK, USA (CMC) — Jamaican jockey Rajiv Maragh remains hopeful about riding in the Breeders Cup Series, despite breaking his arm in a fall at Belmont last Saturday.

He underwent surgery last Sunday to have plates and screws inserted to help stabilise the arm and was discharged from North Shore Hospital on Monday.

Speaking on online social networking service Twitter, Maragh said he was still eyeing the big event at Santa Anita Park from October 31 to November 1.

“Headed home from hospital in great shape. In 10 days will have a follow up and a prognosis for return to riding. Fingers crossed for BC (Breeders Cup),” Maragh tweeted.

Media here also quoted Maragh’s agent, Tony Micallef, as saying that doctors had given the 29-year-old a fair chance of suiting up for the Breeders Cup.

“The doctor said the bone will heal in two weeks, and he wants to see him in two weeks,” Micallef said. “There is a chance he could ride the Breeders Cup, the doctor said.”

Maragh took a heavy tumble last Saturday during the US$1-million Jockey Club Gold Cup Stakes when his mount, Wicked Strong, clipped heels with Moreno on the far turn.

He had earlier on the day’s card won the Grade 4 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes with Main Sequence.

Maragh has one Breeders Cup win, three years ago, aboard Caleb’s Posse in the Dirt Mile.
