Whittingham is 2014 sprint champ
MAURICE Whittingham added another title to his illustrious motorsports career when he was announced the Drivers Rallysport Club’s (DRC)’s Tru-Juice RallySprint Champion for 2014 at the DRC’s annual general meeting held at Off The Hook in New Kingston, on Tuesday.
“It’s great to have won, but I’m still not done yet. I want the overall Rallysport title and the dexterity championship,” Whittingham told Auto.
Whittingham is embroiled in a points battle with Daryl King for those remaining two titles. The Montegonian returned to competition this year and has found nothing but success. While he didn’t win any of the sprints outright, he’s maintained a constant top-three finishing rate, which contributed to his victory over his rivals.
“Consistency was part of the plan,” Whittingham said.
He heaped praise on his sprint car, a Toyota Levin.
“I’m especially happy to have taken the title with the equipment I have because the car isn’t a known element in the sport. It shows that it’s not what you have, but how you drive it,” he explained.
Whittingham’s car has been turning in times similar to, or faster than, more modern machinery. He laments that his lack of sponsorship hasn’t allowed him to optimise the car for sprints.
“I’ve been running on tarmac suspension for the whole season,” Whittingham said.
Ironically, he pips Ironshore’s tarmac sprint as his toughest event, but not for on-track reasons.
“The way the points were delegated after Ironshore didn’t sit right with me,” he said.
His key memory from the championship was his performance at Brighton River, St Elizabeth.
“That was just a great event, great place to drive and the competition was of high quality,” he said.
Despite his win cementing the hold veterans have in the genre of motorsport, Whittingham is happy with the health of the sport, given the performances of the younger drivers.
“Real drivers love competition and the majority of it takes place right in the JA2 class,” he said.
