Great golf, good times at OCEANStyle Celebrity weekend

CELEBRITIES and golf aficionados descended on Montego Bay last week to take part in one of the richest purses in the Caribbean — the two-day OCEAN Style Celebrity Golf Weekend.

The two days of play were wrapped up on Saturday afternoon with the second of the two events — the OCEAN Style Celebrity Golf Invitational.

This year’s participants included Guinness World Record Holder for Golf Speed Maurice Allen, legendary basketballer Julius ‘Dr J” Erving and three-time NBA champion John Salley. Not to be outdone, the local golfing community was also represented by golfing greats such as former cricketing great Jeffery Dujon and lead Jamaican golfer Sean Morris.

Of the experience, Sean Morris, former captain of the men’s golf team shared that “golf for me is always a good experience. Happily the weather stood up.”

Saturday’s scramble held at Cinnamon Hill saw eight teams of four jostling for first place. It was won by celebrity team Maurice Allen, Julius ‘Dr J’ Erving, Flex Alexander and Adam Bjorn. Finishing second was the Montego Bay-based team of Deryk Meany, Jason Watt, George Watt and Al Robinson.

The Anthony Anderson Golf Classic held the day before at the White Witch Golf Course presented a challenge of a different nature. Individuals engaged in head-to-head competition for a prize of four days/three nights at Iberostar Canun, a three-day/two-night vacation at Couples Resorts, and a weekend at Strawberry Hill. This was won by Jake Becker.

The juniors played alongside the seniors on both days and held their own. Two juniors, Tiana Cruz and Jack Stein, won the ‘closest to the pin’ prizes at the White Witch Golf Course and at Cinnamon Hill, respectively.

The sexiest golfer prize was presented to Shelly Ann Hendrickson, who beat both Gregory Mayne and Jeff Dujon for the award.

The lucky winner of the best overall score for the weekend, Jake Becker, walked away with the JetSmarter Private Jet Membership. Each player also received a membership to the Pop-Up Gourmet Advantage Card programme and a pass to use the Club Mobay/Club Kingston first-class lounge.

The US $1-million hole-in-one prize was not claimed, but they can all try again next year.

Partners of the OCEAN Style FashionShowcase Weekend 2014 included Iberostar Hotels and Resorts, JetSmarter.com, Pop Up Gourmet, Jamaica Observer, NOA, Powerseed, Live Stush, FYAH 105, Delta, VIP Attractions, Margaritaville, Hot 102 and Intuit Concepts.
