Mindley stars on debut for Jamaica

A composed half-century by Nikita Miller propelled Jamaica’s franchise team to a moderate total of 208 all out when bad light forced a stop to play at the end of day one of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Professional Cricket League (PCL) Four-Day Tournament against Windward Islands Volcanoes at Sabina Park yesterday.

Miller was left unbeaten on 57, after being involved in a 70-run ninth-wicket stand with debutant Marquino Mindley (43) that led a recovery act for the Jamaicans. Mindley returned to grab three wickets for seven runs as the Windward Islands Volcanoes were at 16 for three in their turn at bat.

Captain Tamar Lambert had earlier won the toss and chose to take first strike on a dry strip, which had a shade of grass that offered a lot of assistance to the bowlers.

Lambert’s decision seemed to backfire as the hosts lost their first two wickets to fast bowler Mervin Matthew with just three runs on the board.

However, John-Ross Campbell (46), who fell four runs short of a half-century, and Jermaine Blackwood (22) carved out a 51-run partnership for the third wicket.

But when both batsmen went Jamaica were left struggling at 79 for five when David Bernard Jr fell for a duck on the stroke of the lunch interval.

Wicketkeeper/batsman Carlton Baugh Jr became the third of left-arm spinner Alston Bobb’s six victims when he went, trapped in front for two after the break before rain forced the players off the field.

Lambert (30) fell playing a sweep shot before Damion Jacobs was brilliantly caught by Romel Currency after play resumed with the score at 120 for eight.

Mindley and Miller then came together on a recovery mission and played intelligently to bring up the 50 partnership off 53 balls.

Mindley was the more aggressive of the two as he raced to 43 from 46 deliveries and at one point took 17 runs off Liam Sebastian’s 10th over before he was unfortunately stumped by wicketkeeper Lindon James.

Bobb was the pick of the bowlers with six for 45 and Mervin Matthew, two wickets for 17. Kenroy Peters and Sebastian had one wicket each for the Volcanoes.

The Windwards would have felt confident of seeing off the bowling for the rest of the day’s play. However, it was not to be as Mindley ran through their top order to push them on the back foot heading into today’s second day.
