Brown cops CAC shot put bronze medal
RAYMOND Brown won Jamaica’s first track and field medal at the 22nd Central American and Caribbean Games yesterday after he took bronze on the men’s shot put event.
Brown threw 18.30m to finish behind Mexican Mario Cota (19.30m), who just beat his teammate Christopher Saenz (19.27m).
Cota’s winning throw came in the final round after Saenz had taken the lead in the third round.
Brown, who represented Jamaica at the World Championships in Russia last year and the Commonwealth Games in Scotland in August, had his best throw in the second round after opening with 17.70m.
He then threw 17.86m on his third attempt, fouled the fourth, threw 17.75m on his fifth, then fouled the sixth.
Meanwhile, Jamaica’s Samantha Curtis advanced to the final of the women’s 400m, while both male competitors Alvin Green and Kegan Campbell both failed to advance.
Curtis was third in her semi-final race in 55.24 seconds and advanced automatically.
Green was last in his semi-final in 48.93 seconds, while Campbell finished fifth in 48.56 seconds.
Curtis will return to action today when she lines up in the first round of the women’s 200m along with Gayon Evans.
Nassive Powell and Marzel Miller will represent Jamaica in the men’s 200m first round.
Andre Clarke will contest the men’s 400m hurdles, while Tara-Sue Barnett and Vanessa Levy will contest the women’s discus throw final while Aubrey Allen will contest the men’s long jump final.
