Central Westmoreland’s Vaz sworn in as MP
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Thirty three-year-old Dwayne Vaz, businessman and former community development officer, was sworn in this morning as the newest member of the current Parliament.
Vaz was greeted with kisses on both cheeks by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, after being sworn in by Speaker of the House of Representatives, Michael Peart.
Vaz then proceeded to greet cabinet ministers Phillip Paulwell and Dr Peter Phillips, who were seated on the government benches, and then walked over to the Opposition’s front benches to greet Leader of Opposition Business, Derrick Smith and finance spokesman Audley Shaw, before taking his seat in the government’s back row.
Opposition MP Daryl Vaz arrived immediately after and also hugged and greeted the newcomer.
Dwayne Vaz defeated the Jamaica Labour party’s (JLP) Faye Reid Jacobs 8720 votes to 6268 to capture the seat previously held by former agriculture minister Roger Clarke.
