City host to Group B of CONCACAF Under-20 championships
CATHERINE HALL, St James — AFTER the successful staging of the Caribbean Football Union’s Men’s Caribbean Championships in November, the Montego Bay Sports Complex will be humming with activity again as it hosts Group B of the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 championships starting on Saturday.
Six teams, led by two-time defending champions Mexico, and including Canada and Cuba, will play at the Montego Bay Sports Complex while Jamaica, the USA and Trinidad join three other nations in Group A at the National Stadium in Kingston.
The Montego Bay Sports Complex will host the final three games on January 24th, the final day of the two-week tournament that will decide the qualifiers for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup to be held in New Zealand later this year.
The winners of each group will automatically qualify under the new format that is being used for the first time. The second and third place nations from each group will advance to the final day knockout phase, with the chance to dispute one of a pair of play-in matches which will determine CONCACAF’s other two World Cup spots.
On Saturday’s opening day of Group B play, Mexico opens the defence of their title against Cuba starting at 3:00 pm, followed by Honduras against El Salvador at 5:30 pm with Haiti against Canada in the 8:00 pm game.
