Off-road contest tomorrow
MOTORSPORTS and adventure fans will have something new to tickle their fancy as the first ever Turbo Energy Drink Jamaica Off-Road Challenge and Scavenger Hunt will take place this Saturday starting at 10:00 am at the Grosvenor Café, St Andrew.
“This is going to be an exciting family event which will allow these off-road vehicles to be seen in their natural habitat,” Craig Powell, co-organiser, told Auto.
The event will take the 25 registered teams to two main spectator areas, the old Caymanas dirt bike track off Mandela Highway by 12 noon, and up to Temple Hall at 3:00 pm. The teams will have 15 items to pick up and five trivia questions to answer on their way as well as completing two tough courses.
Challenges to test competitors range from completing a cane field maze to tackling an off-road course with a cup of Cool Runnings water in their vehicle. The field has been split into two, stock and modified. Mixed in with several private teams are corporate teams from KIG, Toyota Jamaica, and Maxxis.
“The real fun will be the Rock and Roll Challenge at Temple Hall. This is a straight-up obstacle course,” Powell explained.
The competitors then return to Grosvenor Café for prize giving at 5:00 pm.
The Turbo Energy Drink Jamaica Off-Road Challenge and Scavenger Hunt is being put on by Jeep Jamaica, an off-road club founded in 1990.
“Since we’ve been operating the off-road club, we felt it would be good to create an event that was spectator-friendly,” Powell said.
Powell hopes that the competition could turn into an annual event.
“Given the support an interest we want to be able to hold it every year at minimum. Even twice yearly, with a second one in the summer,” he said.
