Eaton still in driver’s seat
Heather Eaton has been re-elected to head the Jamaica Karting Association (JKA) at the group’s Annual General Meeting held at Eden Garden’s Wellness Resort & Spa, St Andrew, last Tuesday night.
“When I took over, I was very unsure, but we worked as a group, the executive and the members to show what is possible,” Eaton told Auto.
She was first elected last year.
Craig Lue accepted his nomination for vice president, while Debra Gore was returned as treasurer. Danah Chisholm has retained her post as JKA secretary. Duncan Stanley, Larry Henriques and Monique Gibbs joined as directors completing the board.
“I have to give special thanks to Debral; she’s put us on sound financial footing. I’m excited to have the motorsports expertise of Monique and Larry. Duncan, who is in the construction field, will help us upkeep the facilities,” she said.
As the first female head of a Jamaican motorsports body, she pointed out that several of the targets she had set during her tenure were met, such as the tightening up of the financial aspects of the JKA and increased media presence to continue over into 2015. She also hinted at a partnership with the Jamaica Automobile Association in the works. Eaton unfortunately indicated that the successful Comer 50cc training programme will be scrapped as it is no longer financially viable.
“That’s part of my aim for 2015, to see if we can revive it before the season starts in March,” she explained.
One of her larger aims is to bring back some unity to karting as she found herself challenged by a small but vocal minority who felt that several club by-laws were not being interpreted in the correct fashion. However, the majority instantly responded with overwhelming support for her leadership.
