ACE shooters Romelda Aiken and Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, along with rising star Thristina Harwood, have announced their readiness for the Supreme Ventures Sunshine series as they are expected to figure prominently throughout.
Though no one needs reminding, goals win matches and the shooting abilities of the trio will be vital to the Sunshine Girls’ chances of a clean sweep. They are expected to be a menace in and around England’s goal area from the get-go when the first of the three-match series gets under way tomorrow at the National Indoor Sports Centre.
Graced with a vast wealth of experience, Aiken told the Jamaica Observer that she is prepared mentally and physically to get the job done.
“The England team is going to be really strong and for us as a team we just have to concentrate on the job that we have to do. Shooting has to be on par, so I will make sure that I do my one hundredper cent to complete the task ahead,” said the 6ft 5in goal-shooter.
Aiken displayed a level of versatility when she played both ends of the court during the Commonwealth Games. The 26-year-old said she would bravely do it again if required to do so during this series.
“We have a set of girls who are willing to take on any job. Whatever task is being thrown out there for us to do in order to be competitive… definitely we will do whatever it takes. So we are fit and we are ready,” she affirmed.
As the tallest professional netball player at 6ft 6in, Fowler-Reid is a 94 per cent high accuracy shooter and she is brimming with confidence.
“As shooters we have to be on par and we have to play hard and I know I am going to convert those shots when I get the ball. My preparations have gone well, we have a very good physical trainer and he has been pushing us to the limit.
“I have a lot of confidence in my teammates, those who will be feeding me with the ball and Romelda as well, and I am sure we will get the job done,” The 25-year-old athlete said.
Meanwhile, Harwood, though not as tall as her more experienced teammates, has demonstrated a high level of shooting ability. The 20-year-old Harwood is best known for her long-range shooting which she displayed during the 2013 Fast5 World Series.
Having made her debut in 2013 against England, Harwood is ready to lead from the front if given the opportunity.
“It would be my pleasure (to work for the team). Whenever I get a chance to play, I will go on the court and shoot to the best of my ability, execute according to the game plan and hopefully we will come out on top,” added the 5ft 10in goal-attack.
Completing the shooting unit are Shantal Slater, Annakay Griffiths and Shanice Beckford, while inspirational captain Nicole Aiken Pinnock, Vangelee Williams and Stacian Facey will hold the defensive line.
The experienced Sasher-Gaye Henry and Paula Thompson, along with Khadijah Williams, Adean Thomas and Nicole Dixon will be featured at centre court.
