Roses in full bloom to level Sunshine Series
England pulled level in the Supreme Ventures Sunshine netball series after putting in a vibrant all-round display to defeat hosts Jamaica 55-47 in the second Test at the National Indoor Sports Centre yesterday.
Both camps agreed to call off the encounter with only one minute and 15 seconds remaining after a power outage at the venue.
On Saturday, the world number three-ranked England team lost the first Test 47-56, but yesterday their players showed high energy across the court to restrict the fourth-ranked Sunshine Girls.
The Roses led 16-11 at the end of Sunday’s first quarter and also held a 31-25 advantage at the half-way stage. The visitors entered the fourth and final quarter ahead 43-34.
England’s goal shooter Jo Harten hit 39 goals from 43 attempts, while Pamela Cookey was nine from 11.
Jamaica’s substitute goal shooter Romelda Aiken scored 18 from 26 tries for Jamaica. Jhaniele Fowler-Reid, who started in the goal shooting position, was 14 from 16, while substitute goal attack Shanice Beckford was 10 from 11.
The Jamaica coaching staff made a few substitutions in trying different combinations and there were moments of ascendancy from the Sunshine Girls.
But each time Jamaica went on a run and cut into the lead, they were let down by careless turnovers.
Jamaica’s head coach Minneth Reynolds said her players had a “flat” performance in defence which gave England the advantage early in the encounter. She added that a few changes were forced due to “injury concerns” within the squad.
She, however, promised a better show for the final game of the series. Anna Mayes, head coach of England, said her team was “wasteful with the ball” in the first game, but gave a more “clinical” display yesterday. Mayes continued that England “applied better pressure throughout the court” to force the Jamaicans to make numerous errors.
The teams play the third and deciding test tomorrow.
