BARBICAN FC began life under new coach Marvin Tate in the Red Stripe Premier League with a 1-0 win over Harbour View at the Compound on Monday night.

Second-half substitute Shaquille Lewis netted the winner five minutes after coming on to replace midfielder Akeem Brown. An ironic twist to the goal was that less than a minute before Lewis scored, Jermie Lynch muffed a golden opportunity to put Harbour View ahead. The nimble-footed player slipped past the Barbican defence but only succeeded in shooting feebly into the waiting hands of goalkeeper Ashek Taylor.

The victory was a morale booster for Barbican FC, though they remain rooted at the bottom of the points standing, but it hurt Harbour View’s chances of moving to second place. They remain in fourth place on 32 points.

With Harbour View’s loss, Waterhouse, who had a 4-1 home win against Rivoli United on Sunday, have now advanced to second place on 34 points behind leaders Arnett Gardens on 41 points. Montego Bay United are in third place on 34 points, but with an inferior goal difference to Waterhouse.

Tate saw the effort from the team as “encouraging”.

“Even though our players are inexperienced I think that they have very good talent, very good skills and what they need now is just the experience from us as coaches to guide them through so that they can gain as they go along.”

The shock defeat left Harbour View’s coach Andrew Hines short on words. “This can only be from a lack of discipline and commitment from the players on the night.”
