MONA FC were confirmed overall leaders in JN/KSAFA Super League football competition, after they defeated fourth-placed Maxfield Park FC 2-0 at Maxfield Park playing field on Saturday.

Chevon Stewart scored in the 27th minute and second-half substitute Gavin McKay added another goal in the 64th to give Mona their fourth win of the season. It was a result that made Mona sole leaders with 12 points after joint leaders at the start of the round, UWI were held to a 1-1 draw by August Town at the Mona Bowl.

Troylan Williams scored for August Town in minute 54, while Mitch Wright scored in minute 59 for a share of the points.

At Maxfield Park, Mona took full advantage of some poor finishing by their hosts to come away winners.

Before Mona scored, Maxfield Park had the better of the exchanges as they moved faster to the ball, but failed to score from the chances that they created.

Then Chad Bennett pinched the ball off Maxfield Park’s defender Nyron Lee, after the defender failed to heed the advice of his goalkeeper Deangelo Austin to pass the ball back to him. The result was that Bennett went clear before crossing to Stewart, who struck a telling right-foot shot away from Austin.

At the break Mona sought to sure up their defence and brought on O’Deanny Morris in place of George Smart and things started to look promising for the leaders. However, with their leading scorer Jordon Moses somewhat suffering from a hamstring problem, McKay was introduced in minute 61.

Three minutes later he doubled the lead and should have made it 3-0 in the 77th minute, but missed his mark by some inches.

In other Zone A results, Allman/Woodford and Shortwood United ended 0-0, while in Zone B, Rockford FC and Santos FC ended 2-2; Brown’s Town edged Bull Bay 1-0, and Rae Town FC courtesy of goals from Orlando Walters and Rasheed Dawkins defeated Mountain View FC 2-0.
