Accused in Spanish Town car theft remanded
A man accused of stealing a motor vehicle from a parking lot of the Bashco branch in Spanish Town was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
Jason Benjamin, who is facing a charge of larceny of a motor vehicle, denied the charge through his attorney C J Mitchell.
The car in question, a Nissan Sunny, was driven from the parking lot, reportedly by Benjamin, on the afternoon of December 12.
The owner, the court heard, after leaving the store, found out that the vehicle was not where he parked it. A report was subsequently made to the police.
It is alleged that the accused man was caught on CCTV cameras driving away the complainant’s car.
Benjamin was arrested on December 19 after being caught driving a white motor car fitting the description of the stolen vehicle. In a caution statement to the police, Benjamin reportedly said, “Bossy, a $7,000 me have fi buy something fi mi girl that’s why me was up there”.
The court was told that an address that Benjamin gave previously to be verified was found to be that of his girlfriend, who informed the police that he did not reside there.
During a bail application on Tuesday, Mitchell argued that his client was being targeted due to two similar matters he had in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
However, the prosecution opposed bail on the basis that Benjamin had committed this latest offence while on bail for a similar offence and that he had no fixed address.
Benjamin was remanded in custody until February 10.
