Soca, EDM lift Levitate
IT was the perfect potion of soca and EDM at Levitate – The Ultimate EDM/Soca Experience held at Hope Gardens in St Andrew, on Saturday night.
“The party had a high energy. Everyone loved the venue and the set-up,” Leighton Myers, Levitate co-organiser, told the Jamaica Observer.
Myers, a medical doctor by profession, joined the four-strong musical line-up as his alter ego DJ Lantern MD. Patrons danced up a storm as Lantern, who, along with DJ Smoke, DJ Cruise and DJ Sanjay, split their sets into two featuring soca and the latest EDM hits, rather than each individual DJ concentrating on one of the two genres. The end result was constant activity on the dance floor since the crowd didn’t have to sit out the sections they might not have any interest in.
According to Myers this was the plan.
“We tried to provide a seamless blend between the soca and the dance music. It’s something we’re trying to pioneer and it worked,” he said.
Only DJ Sanjay admitted breaking the rules as the closing DJ, throwing in some dancehall and rap to end the night. Happy with their first event Myers hopes to grow the Levitate brand, expecting more sponsors and a bigger venue in the future.
“We want to make it a seasonal event, two to three times a year,” he said.
