MBU fight back to edge Tivoli

…’Teddy’ Johnson off field sideshow delays game

TUCKER, St James — Montego Bay United scored their first victory over Tivoli Gardens this season and avenged their only home loss with a come-from-behind 2-1 win in their third-round Red Stripe Premier League game at Wespow Park yesterday.

Schoolboy Kashief Brown scored in the 57th minute, his third goal in as many games to equalise the scores and Fabian McCarthy got the winner in the 87th minute from the penalty spot.

Lennox Creary had given the visitors the lead in the 47th minute.

Montego Bay United are now unbeaten in three games and improved to 43 points and second place for at least 24 hours as Waterhouse on 41 points, play Harbour View on Monday night.

Yesterday’s game was held up briefly in the second half as former national player Jermaine ‘Teddy’ Johnson had to be escorted by police from the Tivoli Gardens bench after he was asked to leave by the match commissioner Tracey Reid.

As he was leaving, Johnson was overheard verbally abusing the official.

Meanwhile, both coaches were satisfied with the result. Montego Bay United’s Carlos Garcia told the Jamaica Observer his team did everything right statistically in the first half to dominate the game, including earning 10 corners to none for Tivoli, but lamented giving up “a stupid goal in the second half”.

“We are coming from a bad patch of matches and that made things tough, but we are getting mentally better and we will get the results,” he said.

Tivoli Gardens coach Alvin Shaw admitted he was “a little bit disappointed”, but added his players had been working hard the last two weeks, playing three games in a short period of time and there was some fatigue.

“I have to commend them as it would have been difficult to come here and expect to beat MoBay twice in two weeks and three times this season,” Shaw said.

MBU had a strong start and pinned Tivoli back in their own area earning a series of corners, but could find no way past the visitors’ defence.

The first real chance of the game went to Ranike Anderson in the 26th minute when his header from a corner flew just over Jacomeno Barrett’s crossbar.

MBU came close in the 45th minute, but Davin Watkins in the Tivoli goal did well to get low to his left and block a shot for a corner.

Tivoli took advantage of a defensive mistake early in the second half and Creary snapped up the loose ball, dribbled into the box and beat Barrett to his right.

MBU fought back and were rewarded 10 minutes later when Dwayne Ambusley muscled his way into the box on the right side and his low shot was partially blocked, but flew to the unmarked Brown who tapped in to level the scores.

The home team were awarded a penalty kick in the 86th minute when Watkins fouled Dino Williams just inside the area after the striker had broken away from nearly half line.

McCarthy powered the ball home past Watkins in the 87th minute, much to the delight of the big crowd.
