Eight records tumble at Gibson McCook Relays

BY PAUL A REID

Eight records including both long jump marks were broken and one equalled at last Saturday’s 39th staging of the Gibson McCook Relays at the National Stadium.

Despite not contesting the Class One 4x100m and the 4x400m open, Kingston College relay teams won six events, including three 4x200m races, while Edwin Allen High ruled the girls’ relays winning four of the seven races on offer.

Kingston College who are expected to push Calabar High for top spot at the ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ & Girls’ Champs later this month, won the 4x100m relays in Class Three and Class Four, the 4x200m in Class One, Class Three and Class Four, as well as the 4x800m where they set a new meet record 7 minutes 33.87 seconds.

St Elizabeth Technical, who had the old record of 7 minutes 34.96 seconds set in 1994, were also under that time as they ran 7 minutes 34.78 seconds, with defending champions Holmwood Technical in third place.

In addition to winning the 4x100m in Class One where they broke their own one-year-old record, Calabar won the Class Two 4x100m as well as the Class Two 4x200m.

Edwin Allen added the 4x200m open and 4x400m open to the Class Two and Class Four 4x100m titles they had won earlier, as St Jago High won two relays — the 4x100m in Class One and Class Three.

Nicholas Gordon produced the second best legal jump of the year when he broke the long jump record with 7.95m (1.7m/s), breaking the old 7.86m set by Jermaine Jackson in 2009.

India’s Ankit Sharma leads the IAAF outdoors list with 8.04m set on February 10 in Thiruvanathapuram.

Gordon jumped 7.95m twice, in the first and second rounds, but the second was aided by an illegal win of 4.8 metres per second.

UTech’s Shanieka Thomas set the new mark in the women’s event with 6.63m (0.6m/s) passing the 6.39m set by former Tacius Golding jumper Kedine Geddes in 2004.

Both clubs/institutions’ mile relays records were broken as the UTech women’s team ran 3 minutes 29.87 seconds, just a shade under the 3:29.88 seconds set last year by a Racers TC team.

The Racers Lions team clocked 3 minutes 03.18 seconds to beat the 3 minutes 03.74 seconds another Racers TC team set two years ago.

The record in the masters men’s 4x100m was also lowered as the Can/Jam Masters team won in 43.82 seconds to erase the 44.4 seconds set by Ocho Rios Masters in 2011.
