Gardening Mar 8
Dear Orchid Doc:
I hope you’re in the best of health. I recently received a Dendrobium aggregatum orchid, but was told it’s difficult to bloom. I went on the net and learnt that it needs a dry winter rest, but also very strong, bright light. Now as you know, Jamaica does not experience winter, so I am having a little problem as to when to stop and start rewatering it. Also, what exposure in the house would better fit its needs? It’s a beauty when in bloom and I would really love to get it comfortable. It’s not a big plant, presently in a 4″ pot. Thanks for any help or suggestions you may have. I live in Westmoreland.
– Angel
Dear Angel:
The aggregatum is indeed a very pretty orchid, and usually blooms around spring for me; I believe it blooms once per year. Even though we don’t experience the cold months of winter as they do up North; we still have cooler temperatures from about November to January. I would stop in November and start again by the end of January.
Strong light would suggests 50 per cent of the light shining at all times.
Dear Orchid Doc:
What is a good way to apply fertiliser to my orchids? I use a watering can, but I find that the fertiliser finishes quite quickly. Can you suggest a better way?
– Lopez
Dear Lopez:
You waste the fertiliser when you use a watering can. Misting from the same spray can that you use for insecticide and fungicide is one of the best ways to apply. Your fertiliser will last much longer, and in doing so you’ll save money.
