Smikle could compete at GC Foster Classic
Jamaica’s national disus record-holder Traves Smikle could compete at this weekend’s GC Foster Classic, which will be held at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The University of the West Indies-Mona student will try to take advantage of a temporary lifting of his two-year drug ban and take part in his first competition for nearly two years.
Smikle was banned by a Jamaica Anti-Doping Commission (JADCO) disciplinary panel last year after he failed a drug test at the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) National Senior Trials in 2013. A sample he submitted was found to contain the banned drug Hydrochlorothiazide.
The ban, which is due to expire in July this year, was temporarily lifted by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) last month, and Smikle will hope to be able to achieve the automatic qualifying standard of 65.00m for the IAAF World Championships that will be held in China later this year.
Smikle, who competed at the Olympic Games in 2012, the same year he broke the national record with a throw of 57.12m at the National Senior Trials, will also have his eyes set on competing at the World University Games in South Korea and the Pan-American Games in Canada in July.
