How did your transformation journey begin?
After years of struggling with being overweight I hit rock bottom. Oftentimes the most challenging periods in our lives are opportunities to grow and emerge stronger than ever before. Those difficult years were an important wake-up call for me, a gift of a need to take urgent action to save myself and become healthier. Now I am able to share that gift with the world. Definitely a blessing.
What has been the hardest part of your journey?
The most challenging part of my journey was definitely the beginning. Breaking free from my bad habits and developing sustainable, lifelong habits was far from easy, but after a few months of true commitment, discipline and sacrifice it started to become second nature. The moment I let go the fixation of “tangible change” happening in a specific time period was when I truly started reaping the rewards of my hard work. Change is hard but if you keep at it every day, it will come. Patience and consistency are both key.
How do you balance being a full-time mother, wife, businesswoman and still find time to work out?
I make it a priority and set reasonable and sustainable goals. It’s very important to plan and schedule your workouts. Every Sunday I take a look at my week and all my obligations, and then schedule in my workouts as if they were an important meeting (because they are!). In a busy week, I may work out for a shorter time period but intensify the session to maximise time. When I give time to myself for a workout I think more clearly, have more energy and feel great about life. This spills over into my career and my role as wife and mother. It’s a win-win to keep it a priority.
Why is weight training so important?
Weight training is actually more important in the weight loss equation than most people realise. This type of training builds lean muscle and promotes fat loss in a way no cardio machine is able to deliver.
This is because the more muscle mass in our bodies, the higher the metabolic rate, which improves weight loss and weight control potential by burning more calories throughout the day, even after completing a workout! By increasing our lean muscle mass and overall strength we are able to work out longer with loads more energy.
What about women who are afraid of lifting heavy weights because they are afraid of bulking up?
My ladies, do not fret about getting bulky and looking manly. This is physically and scientifically impossible unless you are pumping yourselves with steroids or taking some kind of body enhancement drug (as is done by so many of the female body builders in competitions). Go as heavy as possible and watch your dream body take form quicker than you thought was ever possible.

What if I don’t have access to weights?
You can incorporate “weights” that you have in your own home if you don’t have access to a gym or traditional dumbbells. Use WATA bottles (1.5-litre and 5-litre bottles), large rice bags, heavy books, detergent buckets filled with water, sand or rice, and even your own body weight! You have a “gym” right at your own home, just get creative.
