Hosin: Math skills lead to higher-paying jobs
President of Guardian Life Limited Eric Hosin has noted that graduates who pursue careers that require proficiency in mathematics, such as actuaries, gain better-paying jobs in Jamaica and across the globe.
Hosin was speaking in his capacity as vice-president of the Insurance Association of Jamaica (IAJ) during a workshop it sponsored for math teachers at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston. The workshop was organised by the Ministry of Education’s National Mathematics Team coordinated by Dr Tamika Benjamin.
Hosin implored the Ministry of Education to continue the math revolution, as he noted that the Asian countries used their mastery of mathematics to grow their economies and to provide a better living standard for their citizens.
The insurance industry executive urged teachers to inspire their students by showing them the practical benefits from excelling in mathematics. The math workshops, which were staged simultaneously across the island in three locations, had some 390 participants.
This is the third year of the IAJ-sponsored workshop series, which is said to have contributed to improving students’ performance in mathematics in CSEC exams last year.
