Four nominated for Accompong Maroon colonel
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica – Four candidates were today nominated to contest the April 16 election in Accompong Town, northern St Elizabeth, for the post of colonel.
Senior members of the Maroon community Meredie Rowe, Elizabeth Campbell, Norma Edwards, and outgoing Colonel Ferron Williams are all vying for the leadership post.
Accompong Town is one of the more popular Maroon villages in Jamaica.
Jamaican Maroons are identified by historians as descendants of slaves who were left behind by Spanish colonisers when they fled Jamaica following the invasion of the British in 1655, as well as runaway slaves from British plantations.
