What They Say! – Richard Azan
When did you start your career as a trainer?
I was born into racing. I was coming to the track from I was a boy and from ever since then I was attached to the sport. I got my trainer’s licence in 1994.
Which horse was your first winner?
I really don’t remember my first winner as it was quite a long time ago, but I can tell you that I was a very happy man at that time. Even though I can’t recall the name of the horse it was a special day for me.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
I have won so many races I don’t even know the odds the horses win at. It doesn’t really matter what are the odds. As long as the horses go past the winning post in front, I am happy. As a trainer you want to win every race that your horses are running in.
Which is the best horse that you have trained?
I did have a few good horses, but I would have to say it’s between Menudo and Mark My Word. Mark My Word was a Triple Crown winner and he won the Superstakes on three occasions. He was a really good horse but unfortunately he died from colic. Menudo was a tremendous horse. Although he did not win any of the Classic races, he came back and won four consecutive Superstakes. If not the top horse, he was one the best during his time. He was a very good horse.
Which is the best horse that you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
I have seen a lot of talented racehorses here at Caymanas Park. I really can’t pick out one, as every horse was good during their time.
Who influenced your career the most?
I was born in racing, so I influenced my career. However, I really can’t complain as everyone here has been good to me as well.
