T’was a Boombastic year
The year 1995 was big for dancehall music. One of its flag-bearers was deejay Shaggy, whose third studio album Boombastic rocked the American pop and R&B charts.
Boombastic contains songs by producers Tony Kelly, Bobby Digital, Robert Livingston and Shaun ‘Sting Int’l’ Pizzonia. Singers Wayne Wonder, Rayvon and Ken Boothe and American rapper Grand Puba are also featured.
The album opened at number one on Billboard’s Reggae Album chart and number 34 on the Billboard 200 Album table. It peaked at number 11 on the R&B/Hip Hop Album chart, and number 37 on in the UK Album chart.
The title track topped the United Kingdom Singles chart. Boombastic soared in the United States after it was featured in a television commercial for Levi’s Jeans. It peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and went number one on the R&B Hip Hop Singles chart.
Other hits from the album include a cover of Mungo and Jerry’s In the Summertime, Why You Treat Me So Bad, The Train Is Coming (with Boothe) and Day Oh which did well in Japan.
The album was certified platinum in the US by the Recording Industry Association of America for sales of over one million copies. In the UK, it was certified gold for sales of over 300,000 copies.
