HARAMBE by Marley for CFW
Bob and Rita Marley’s daughter Cedella is on our style radar this week. Why? The fashion designer, musician, children’s book author, and entrepreneur will launch her Harambe collection at the 15th iteration of Caribbean Fashionweek – June 6-15 in Kingston.
“The collection — to be made using Ankara fabrics sourced from a variety of African vendors primarily in West Africa — is, according to Marley, ” inspired by my mother (Rita) and the numerous others who evoke the spirit of Africa… my mother loves colour and accessories and takes inspiration from her surroundings. Harambe is for the woman in touch with her roots, the woman who is bold and authentic… who loves pattern, colour and both vintage and current trends ” It is this design ethos that will be reflected in the looks she plans to send down the runway.
“Performing for the majority of your life can inspire you to dress in a way that sets you apart from the rest. I have always loved how she (Rita Marley) can wear a very bold skirt and head wrap with a simple T-shirt. She’s original and experimental in her choices and always mixes traditional shapes with eclectic prints, acessories and with her very unique styling — that’s true Harambe style. And like my mother’s philosophy, my message to the woman who will wear my collection is to just be yourself.
A stylish enough message, we reckon, from the woman who launched her clothing label in 2001 — a collection of relaxed women’s wear with a tailored bohemian style and rasta edge in vivid colours and prints — named after her father’s debut album Catch A Fire.
Marley’s fashion career has blossomed since then with collections such as Nice Time Deconstructed, Nice Time Kids and High Tide.
Cedella Marley Designs (CDM), in collaboration with Puma, designed the music-inspired and retro uniforms for the Jamaican track team for the 2012 Olympics which were shown at CFW 2012.
Unveiled at the London Olympics, Marley’s designs won several accolades including being named one of the best team kits of all countries participating in the Summer Olympics.
Marley’s designs have also received coverage in Vogue and Glamour.
