Bringing Henna To Life
Graphic artist Nicky Williams is ready to make the age-old art of henna and jagua tattooing a staple in beauty and aesthetics on the local scene. After studying at Cheshire Academy in Connecticut, Williams is now back in Jamaica to unleash her talents. Under the Dryer shares her story.
How the journey started…
I became fascinated with henna tattoos after I received one long ago on a school trip to Six Flags. I thought it was the coolest invention. After completing high school I spent a year in Sarasota, Florida at Ringling College of Art and Design where I studied Advertising Design. During this time my artistic capabilities grew exponentially. I then decided that it was time to move back to Jamaica to fulfil my artistic journey.
Making The Dream A Reality…
I attended Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in 2010 where I studied Graphic Design and Illustration. For my final-year show, I wanted to introduce a fresh and captivating form of art that was also appealing. I created The Henna Shop and introduced henna tattoos to the public for the first time.
I decided to continue tattooing and working as a freelance graphic artist. I’ve built a growing fan base for my henna artwork and I am also excited about working with The Face Place to offer henna tattoos in addition to their manicure and pedicure packages.
Following no particular design, Williams allows her artwork to speak for itself with free-hand designs flowing from her mind as her hand directs her brush. Henna/jagua tattoos dry within 24 hours and lasts two weeks on average.

HEADLINE: White House Tresses
Last Saturday, the White House Correspondents’ Association hosted their 101st annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner (#WCHD) at the Washington Hilton in Washington, DC. One thing for sure, and two things for certain, the ladies stepped out in fine style, showing off haute couture designer threads and of course, fabulous hair. Sharing tips on how to achieve and maintain three of her favourite looks is fashion designer/hairstylist Lisa McIntosh-Aris.
Chrissy Teigen
Sports Illustrated cover girl Chrissy Teigen opted for lighter blonde highlights this go ’round, but stayed true to her signature beach waves, and credits hairstylist Seiji Yamada for her beach waves ‘do.
Lisa’s Tip: This look is perfect for a night out on the town! The long and loose tendrils are a hot pick for the season. Her hair is free and has lots of movement with layers throughout and streaks of beautiful colour — a great style pick for spring. To get the look, cleanse and deep-condition hair with Motions Lavish Conditioning Shampoo. Keep in mind that the products you apply to your hair can make or break the style!

Irina Shayk
Russian model Irina Shayk played with the words sleek and sexy for her #WCHD red-carpet debut and kept her mane slicked back into a low ponytail to complement her gorgeous peach-toned silk halter gown.

Laverne Cox
The 2015 Daytime Emmy Award winner of the Outstanding Special Class award and breakout star of the Netflix original series Orange Is The New Black Laverne Cox hit double trend marks with her centre-parted romantic curls.
Lisa’s Tip: The centre-parted romantic curls! Achieving this hairstyle is quite simple. As we know, it’s very hot and the heat will take a toll on your hair without proper treatment. Protect your roots by applying a heat protectant before curling, and ensure you use a curling iron to achieve the curls.

Maria Menounos
Hollywood actress Maria Menounos opted for long bone-straight tresses and completed her look with an orange Stella McCartney belted contour gown.
Lisa’s Top: This is one of my favorite hairstyles, straight, minimal hair without the drama. You can achieve this look with your natural hair or by adding extensions, and is also low-maintenance. To get the look, section hair and blow dry using a thermal protector. Straighten with a flat iron until the hair is sleek and gorgeous. Use Creme of Nature Argan Oil Gloss & Shine polisher for sheen and a healthy glow.

Michelle Obama
Style maven and First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama has played with different hairstyles since we were first introduced to her back in late 2008. She’s given us short bobs, long bobs, beach wave ‘dos, and a pixie, to name a few, and her very recent ponytail during a Jeopardy appearance that had everyone in a tizzy wondering if Mrs Obama went bald. Moral of the story: FLOTUS can do no wrong.

Tracee Ellis Ross
Star of the ABC hit series black-ish Tracee Ellis Ross pulled her curly locks back into milkmaid braids for her red-carpet appearance. No stranger to the French-inspired ‘do, Ross opted for the look once more to complement her orange floor-length cape dress.
Lisa’s Tip: Natural hair with a twist — a look you can achieve at home. The über simple, vintage hairstyle only requires finger work. If you don’t know how to braid, however, visit your hairstylist.

Naya Rivera
The Latina mom-to-be exuded class and sophistication in a sleek low-slung bun, proving understated elegance is always in style.
Lisa’s Tip: This low-slung bun is gorgeous — a simple look that can be achieved in less than 15 minutes. To achieve this look, shampoo and condition hair, then blow dry. Add sheen to the hair from roots to tip, then use a flat iron to amplify the sheen factor. Brush the hair down into a neat ponytail and then tame any unruly edges with Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Paste to polish the look.
