Cable thieves leave LIME customers sour
KINGSTON, Jamaica – Another case of cable theft has left LIME customers in Linstead, St Catherine, and surrounding areas without proper Internet and telephone services.
LIME said in a release today that the area has been severely affected after thieves in search of copper cables ended up chopping the main fibre optic cables, cutting off communication to thousands of customers and causing more than J$2 million dollars’ worth of damage and losses.
No further damage was done to the cables when the thieves supposedly discovered that it did not contain the copper for which they were searching.
“The consequences go beyond simple theft, and pose a significant detrimental effect upon commercial life in the affected rural communities. It also poses a personal safety and national security risk when key operations in the area do not have access to modern telecommunications services,” explained Ronnie Thompson,LIME’s head of Service Support.
