‘Yawn, what’s new? Next story please!’

Talk Back

JAMAICA Observer online readers have taken Police Commisisioner Dr Carl Williams to task over his announcement of the planned introduction of more stringent measures to curb the spiralling crime rate. For many readers, they have heard the story before. Here are some edited comments:

Jamaicans Unite ByLisa

Why is he sending warning? Why not just do your job? I’ve noticed, throughout my lifetime, that people who do the most talking rarely act on their words. I’ve also noticed this trend with Jamaica’s law enforcers and politicians; dem love talk and rarely act.

Mike Beckles

Yawn!

Tony tuff

Yadda, yadda, yadda, talk, talk, all di time with nothing behind it except murder and mayhem keeping the funeral homes in business and poor people grieving. Please, sir, when you get to the point when something is really being done to curb the crime monster you can get back to us.

Toronto12

Yawn. What’s new? Next news story please.

peejay the original

…Let’s see action instead of just words. The criminals are not scared, they don’t live in fear like law-abiding citizen do.

Josef James

How about the application of legislation that were designed to counter crimes? Anyone has ever been arrested for child grooming?

Ellydeedo

This effort by the commissioner is welcomed and most appreciated. I believe with the support of the citizens, it should place a dent in the criminal activities that have taken over those communities.

Guest

Sounds good… I think.

CHUCK EMMANUEL the ORIGINAL

@Guest: Not tough enough, since these are just announcements.

err gag ViewMaster

Anything lawfully done to pacify the murder and crime rate is fully appreciated by all.

@liqyliqy

Deploy the army in full force; call it a state of emergency if you want, but we need the army out working with the police.

CR Cool

@liqyliqy: Very good IDEA. But unfortunately they need retraining. Because they sit down so long earning FREE taxpayers money, while playing dominoes, eating FREE and getting FAT.

TM UK

All we can hear is pure talk from past and present commissioners of police; we need some action now! Without action your words mean nothing.

Master_Pain

@TM UK

His bosses are the minister of national security and the minister of defence aka the prime minister. He and others before him, must answer to them and can’t do much without their approval

CR Cool

@TM UK: You’re so RIGHT. But how can that be accomplish, when he just NOTIFY the CRIMINALS of his intent? They think the criminals don’t read the the papers and watch TV. So the criminals will use their alternatives.

Mark Trought

The biggest crime is still poor governance and poverty. That is where we are losing focus.

GEOFF

Here we go again! Another announcement and warning. Have you guys seen that movie Groundhog Day?

Forward1

I welcome the honesty, but just do the job and stop with the announcements. Enough already with these long bag a chat! Action!

Manley Protege

408 murders and we’re only in the middle of May. Heaven help us.

Yadda

Seriously though, Commish, what is new about this plan? I am all ears.

NYviaJamaica

Yet another ‘anti-crime measure’. These so called ‘anti-crime’ measures seem to be implemented every day of the week… they have made no difference to the crime situation.

Mutty Perkins

Talk is cheap. This new commissioner does not inspire confidence… looks clueless on TV… I hope I’m wrong.

BTW, in so many instances we see prisoners escape… and the police have no photo of them to put on TV. Can’t even take a photo! How on earth they gonna bring down crime!

Livingston Brown

408 murders in less than five months, and we’re not having a civil war!. The only purpose these announcements serve is to calm a terrified nation. Now there are calls to bring the army out.

The only use the Jamaican police force has is to direct traffic and escort politicians.

Buff Teethr

We are a nation of announcements, but little to NO action. I have listened to these pronouncements for over 20 years. The next thing we will do after this announcement is to form a commission to study the matter, file a report, then put it on a shelf.

Bobb23

OMG! The population of Jamaica is about the same as Toronto, yet 408 murder’s here so far? Outrageous! If I were a vacationer and knew this statistic, I certainly would pick somewhere else to go!

proactive

Commissioner, we don’t need any new anti-crime measure, the whole premise of your job is anti-crime. Basically, you are saying you are going to take your head out of the sand and start doing your job.

Buds

Only one way to deal with mosquito, squash them.

Hayila

First, you have to get rid of the criminals in the force.

Anoni Muss

Just do it and stop the grand announcements and chatting! What’s the point in announcing crime-fighting strategies to the public, which includes the very criminals you are trying to catch? So, they can take necessary precautions or is it to seem proactive to the public? Just get the crime rates down and that will be enough of a statement

MrPlato

As far back as I can remember (about the 1960’s) every police commissioner has been babbling the same spin that shows just how much they are in over their heads. Where is the action that results in the imprisonment of the numerous dons living in mega-mansions in plain sight (without any legitimate income) and openly ruling over very large communiites? The police only chase after the small fry — never touching the very well known dons and gang leaders that indoctrinate, arm and pay the killers.

Avon Wealthy Anderson

Action, not a bag a mouth!

blackconservative

Beware? OK!

JA_Get_Real

Why warn the criminals? Just do di ting and stop chat. After all, criminals don’t issue warnings to law-abiding citizens, and they’re very effective at their trade for that.

Mr. Starr

Here we go again! Reactive instead of a proactive approach.
