Off-duty cop kills alleged robber

PORTLAND, Jamaica – An alleged robber was shot dead by an off-duty police officer early this morning along the Spring Bank road in Port Antonio, Portland.

He has been identified as Calvin Henry, also called ‘Ninja’ who was reportedly listed as person of interest by the police recently.

It was reported that the 43-year-old approached the officer about 1:30 am, pointed a gun at him and demanded his possessions. The officer allegedly pulled his firearm in defence and shot Henry, killing him.

A homemade firearm was recovered from the scene.

The police say Henry had just returned from prison and was out on bail. He is also suspected of being involved in a number of robberies recently committed in Port Antonio.

Meanwhile, people at the crime scene expressed relief at news of the death. One person said, “mi did fraid a di bowy like puss, mi can walk a road again” while another said “I can go wash mi vehicle again at 2 o’clock as man not going tek away mi earnings in the early morning”.

INDECOM is investigating the incident.
