JET to award schools on environmental initiatives Tuesday
THE Jamaica Environment Trust (JET) will tomorrow announce the awards for schools participating in the Schools’ Environment Programme (SEP), which is the trust’s flagship environmental education initiative.
The event kicks off at the Knutsford Court Hotel with an exhibition of environmental work from the top performing SEP schools.
The SEP is currently delivered in 31 schools across the island.
In early June representatives from the environmental education community traversed the island judging 12 of the top performing SEP schools, each of which was assessed on the four SEP focus areas of greening, solid-waste management, environmental research and the strength of its environmental club.
Judges also looked at creativity, knowledge, curriculum infusion, record-keeping, and community outreach.
Each year SEP guides teachers and students in campus-based activities they undertake through their schools’ environmental clubs. At the end of the academic year, top performing schools are assessed and awarded for their environmental work.
President of the Press Association of Jamaica Dionne Jackson Miller will be guest speaker at the awards ceremony.
