Who will win the St Leger trophy?
THE country’s top native-bred three-year-olds will once again showcase their talent in tomorrow’s Jamaica St Leger over 2,000 metres (10-furlongs). Eleven horses allied with the best jockeys on local soil will vie for this prestigious event – the third and final jewel in the Triple Crown. This year’s race is sponsored for the first time by ISP Finance Services Limited.
While in any given horse race any number can play, the main area of interest surrounds the rivalry between stable companions, Ali Baba and Seeking My Dream.
Ali Baba drew first blood when he beat Seeking My Dream in the 2,000 Guineas, however Seeking My Dream turned the tables in the Derby, thus setting the stage for an exciting and memorable race in the St Leger.
The Fearless Vision – Ahwhofah offspring ran well in the Derby. Ali Baba was in a challenging position at the two-furlong pole but was obviously outdone by the 2,400 metres. Now going 400 metres less, it can argued that he will turn the tables on Seeking My Dream. Ali Baba has raced six times this year with four wins and two seconds for earnings of $4,354,350.
Meanwhile, Seeking My Dream (Seeking The Glory – Alsafra), who produced a tremendous run to win the Derby over 2,400 metres on June 13, has proved to be the best stayer among his peers, and given the nature of this race should once again be the horse to beat. His dam, Alsafra, was a Triple Crown winner, and without doubt Seeking My Dream has the pedigree to complete the Classic double. His partner, jockey Omar Walker, is brimming with confidence.
While the main interest will be on rivalry between Ali Baba and Seeking My Dream, punters should not discount the chances of the Richard Azan-trained Kronus.
Kronus did not run up to scratch in the Derby. His performance was lacklustre, as his usual final surge in the straight was absent. He has won the Lotto Classic for the Governor’s Cup over tomorrow’s distance beating Seeking My Dream, and with Shane Ellis now in the saddle instead of Richard Mairs, Kronus could well be a match for Seeking My Dream and Ali Baba at the end. Could he be the fly in the ointment for the big two?
Of the others, the Harry Parsard pair of Original Train and Superluminal proved their worth in the Derby when finishing fourth and fifth respectively. They should again earn well for their connections.
