‘Baby Scam’ slated for Centrestage
FOLLOWING the success of their previous production, Saving Alligator High, Jambiz International is hoping to have another hit on their hands with The Baby
Scam, which opens at Centrestage Theatre
in St Andrew, this weekend.
Lenford Salmon of Jambiz told the Jamaica Observer that there is no secret formula for success in local theatre, but rather the breakthrough lies in a product that has resonance with the Jamaican people.
“We are selling a product just like any other. We are looking to give the audience what they want. We do have standards that we uphold, however, so if nudity and expletives are what the audience wants, we are not prepared to go there. Wholesome entertainment is our niche,” he said.
Salmon added that Jambiz has been lucky that the pen of long-time writer Patrick Brown has found resonance with local audiences who have been flocking their productions in droves.
“For many people, entertainment is synonymous with laughter, but we have sought to take it a step further and open up a window to have audiences open up to an experience. We recognise that our productions appeal to a wide cross-section… those who want just laughter and the set who require more than just a laugh, but rather a strong story,” said Salmon.
The cast for the new comedy The Baby Scam features the Jambiz Krew, led by the ever popular comedic actor Glen ‘Titus’ Campbell, and is rounded out by Camille Davis, Sakina Deer, Sharee Elise and Courtney Wilson.
The Baby Scam revolves around ace pharmaceutical salesman Rocky (Courtney Wilson). All is going to plan, until Rocky gets a rather strange, uninvited visitor to his room — the skimpily dressed and alluring Trixie (Sakina Deer) passing herself off as a ‘gift’ from Rocky’s boss.
The newly-wed Rocky will have none of it and politely explains that his marital commitment will not allow him to indulge, much to the disbelief and annoyance of Rocky’s bona fide brethren and colleague salesman — the lecherous Scrappy (Glen Campbell), a devout bachelor. Trixie is soon joined by her accomplice Lilah (Camille Davis). Before the dust from that bombshell has settled, Rocky’s wife Bree (Sharee Elise) decides to pay her husband a surprise visit in Ocho Rios. Panic sets in, and the real fun begins.
