What They Say! – Douglas Badaloo
When did you start your career as a jockey?
I started my career as a jockey in 2002. However, I was involved in horse racing long before I started to ride officially, as I would go to Caymanas Park on my own, mainly because I had nothing else to do, and watch the horses run in the mornings and on racedays. From then on I developed a liking for horses and that was that, as they say. I wanted to become part of the racing industry and went about doing my apprenticeship before starting my career as a jockey.
Which horse was your first winner?
My first winner came aboard Miss Imao, trained by Tyrone Prince. For some strange reason, I felt normal after winning my first race. All the excitement and joy was inside me, but I guess I was unable to get them out. Nevertheless, I felt proud and very pleased to ride my first winner and certainly for me it represents a personal milestone in my career.
Which horse was your longest odds winner?
My longest odds winner was Son of a Minister at 99-1. Maybe it was the odds, but this upset win on Son of a Minister I celebrated. No one gave us any chance and we proved them wrong, as in racing there aren’t any sureties, that is why they run the races. Son of a Minister and Douglas Badaloo got the job done at odds of 99-1. A good win.
Which is the best horse that you have ridden?
To be honest, I never actually went on any big horse as they say in racing. I have been on board some good horses but every horse I rode I would say that they were talented.
Which is the best horse you have seen race at Caymanas Park?
In my many years at Caymanas Park, I have seen so many talented horses perform. Some were sprinters, some were stayers, so it is extremely difficult for me to pinpoint any one horse as the best I have seen on the track. Many horses have come and done great things in their era, let us just be grateful for their presence and performances.
Who has influenced your career most?
Well, I am a fighter. I didn’t have anybody to push me at the time. But give thanks to all trainers, owners, grooms, jockeys, and everyone for their support,as their assistance is always needed to push yourself in the right direction.
