Ellis, Walker star with three-timers
IN-FORM jockey Shane Ellis highlighted yesterday’s 10-race card at Caymanas Park when he guided the up-in-class Franfield to victory in an Open Allowance event.
The three-year-old chestnut colt by Traditional – Supa Lei by Royal Minister was sent off as the 5-2 second favourite, but ran above expectations to prove a handful for the down-in-class 7-5 favourite All Correct (Robert Halledeen up) in the 1,600-metre race.
Franfield broke well from gate number eight, and after a brief tussle with Raging Prospect (Wesley Henry up) leaving the half-mile, Ellis relaxed his charge and opened up a one-length gap on the field as they approached the homestretch.
However, All Correct came with a telling run on the outside, and may have thought he had the race won when he locked horns with Franfield at the furlong pole. But Ellis released his mount and briefly switched the whip in the left hand to which the Elite Bloodstock Limited-owned colt responded by pulling away to win by one-and-a-half lengths.
All Correct was second, with Phineas (Aaron Chatrie astride) and Timeforarms (Shamaree Muir up) completing the frame. The winner covered the distance in a swift 1:38.3 minutes, with splits of 23.3, 45.4, and 1:11.0 minutes.
The win was Ellis’ third on the card as he also guided debutante Another Bullet in the third event and Houdini’s Magic in the fifth. He now joins four-time champion Omar Walker at the top on 45 wins, as the latter also rode a triple on the day.
Walker’s winners were No Money Friend in the second, Unbreakable in the sixth and Meritone in the seventh.
“I am just going to keep winning races and we will see what happens in the end. May the best man win,” Ellis told journalists.
Meanwhile, the day’s feature event, the Grooms’ Association of Jamaica Trophy was won by 42-1 outsider Nuh Vex with Prince Holder in the saddle. The six-year-old bay gelding out of War Marshall-Princess Chioneso by Law of the Sea came with a late surge from the number 11 draw to win the 1,000-metre straight event in 1:00.2 minutes in a strong head wind.
Interestingly, the V&O Racing Stables-owned charge had two disappointing finishes at the $250,000 claiming level, but managed to turn the tables on a $350,000 field, getting the better of 6-5 favourite Country Train by a head.
Racing continues at the track today with another 10-race card.
