Ruddy’s Boy – a winner second time out
With the two-year-old season unveiling itself slowly but surely, Ruddy Boy set the cats among the pigeons with an unexpected but thoroughly deserved win on Saturday last at Caymanas Park.
Trained by former jockey Fernando Geddes, the chestnut colt by Dayton Flyer – Awesome Tassy was kept as close as possible to the rails by his rider Aaron Chatrie after starting from the number one draw. While his five other rivals were trying to find their best spots to race, Chatrie, who is known to prefer of riding close to the rails, simply channelled Ruddy’s Boy along the shortest route over the four-furlong event (800 metres), the longest the juveniles have raced this season.
The win by Ruddy’s Boy came from only his second start. On his first outing he finished a noticeable fourth to trendsetter, Fedora. Second in the race was the hot 1-9 favourite Poppy’s Pride from the Philip Feanny camp. Kimmy’s Train was third at odds of 9-2.
The winning time was 49.2 seconds, with a quarter (two furlongs) split of 23.4 seconds. Ruddy’s Boy is owned by Antonio Barker and Rohan Wright.
