Calypsonian Lord Laro’s wife dies
NORMA Lara, who worked in the Jamaican entertainment and leisure industries for over 40 years, died July 5 in Montego Bay at age 72.
Singer Kenneth ‘Lord Laro’ Lara, her husband of 52 years, told the Jamaica Observer that the cause of death was “heart-related”.
Norma Lara worked for several years with the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission and the Jamaica Tourist Board. She also managed her husband’s career.
“Norma was a jovial person, a happy person. She brought a lot of happiness to my life,” said Lord Laro.
Trinidadian Kenneth Lara (Lord Laro’s real name) and Hanover-born Norma Evans married in Port-of-Spain in December 1962. They met that year when he performed his song, Referendum, on Teenage Dance Party, a radio show she hosted on the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation.
The thanksgiving service for Norma Lara was held July 18 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Montego Bay. She is also survived by two children, two grandchildren, 17 adopted children, one brother and five sisters.
