From the Horse’s mouth – July 31
NINE HORSES CLAIMED ON SUNDAY
Nine horses were claimed on Sunday’s 10-race card. From the second race Sound of Miracle was claimed on a $180,000 tag by Steven Todd for himself; Herecomestrouble was claimed by Ludford Williams for Janet Najair, while Reign Over All went to Tyrone Prince for owner Basil Edwards for the same $180,000.Hawkeye was claimed by trainer Lorne Kirlew for Derrol Frazer; Winesha was taken by Neive Graham for O’Shaun Connection, while Speedy Process was claimed by Welsh Soutar for Michael Francis, all from the third event on $250,000 tags. In the fifth event,Fill’s Fancy was claimed by trainer Terrence McWhinney for $450,000, so too were Raja Sarangi, claimed by Everal Francis for himself, and New Kingston, claimed by Marlon Anderson for owner Carlton Watson.
APPRENTICE KURI POWELL MAKES MOST OF CHANCE RIDE
Apprentice Kuri Powell secured his 43rd career win when he made all on General Togo in the final event on Sunday’s 10-race programme at Caymanas Park.Ironically, the five-year-old chestnut horse by War Marshall – Victreelbel by Dawn Quixote was earlier listed without a rider. But trainer Conroy Tulloch opted for the rarely used Powell, who grasped the 6-1 chance ride with both hands. General Togo as per usual ventured out with his front-running style; however, Powell ensured that the free-running horse relished the milder pace and took charge from the number nine draw with a very relaxed effort.
FAVOURITES BITE THE DUST
Sunday’s 10-race programme proved to be a graveyard for favourites as only one favourite, New Kingston, prevailed. The longest odds winner was Don Tudor with Ruja Lahoe, who won at the enticing odds of 30-1. Despite the lack of favourites winning, both Super 6s were won while the Pick-9 proved elusive for punters. The Pick-9 now has a carryover $1,180,183.20.
MULLINGS, LUNAN BENEFIT FROM EQUIPMENT CHANGE
Veteran jockeys Oniel Mullings and Richard Lunan both made long overdue visits to the winner’s enclosure in contrasting fashion at Caymanas Park on Sunday.Mullings scored in the second race on the 10-race programme when he brought Reign over All from behind to win by half a length in a $180,000 claiming event over 1,100 metres. Trainer Michael McIntosh’s decision to remove the visor bore fruit as the five-year-old bay gelding by Outrigger- Reigning Heroine by Prime Timber produced a late burst of speed to just get home ahead of Lashing Force (Shamaree Muir) and Herecomestrouble (Richard Mitchell) in a blanket finish.Lunan registered his win in the ninth race, the day’s feature for the Master Blaster Trophy. He guided Agakhan to an easy win because of an equipment change: the visor was fitted in place of the figure eight.
