Records fall at ‘Vernam’
THE cars just got faster and records fell at the Nestlé Supligen Drag Challenge #3 put on last Sunday at Vernamfield, Clarendon, by the National Drag Racing Circuit (NDRC).
“The meet went well. There was a full day of qualifying and eliminations. All finals were run and the awards presentation concluded the meet,” “Stephen Gunter, NDRC executive member, told Auto.
The record-breaking started with the 164 racers showing up to compete — the highest number to date at an NDRC event and smashing the previous total of 136. At the end of the day, when the action finally cooled down, there were two other records that had bitten the dust. Caymanian Michael Williams set a new four-wheel drive quarter-mile time, making an 8.945 second pass, and in the process being the first four-cylinder vehicle to post an eight-second time slip. Locals got into the record books as well as Xavia Murray from Mandeville who ran a 10.448, which is the best elapsed time for a naturally aspirated four-cylinder.
“The breaking of records speaks to the level of commitment by racers who have clearly embraced the NDRC drag racing development programme,” said Gunter.
Racing was close all day with several breakout times, one of which benefited Davin Virgo who won Street 16 after Pascale Gottgens ran a faster time than the class allowed. Super Street 15 saw both drivers breaking out, but Ricardo Lynch was declared the winner. The same thing happened in the Superior Parts 14 class, and victory went to Lauren Sukhu. Damion Scott won Pro Street 13. Jevonnie Jacobs won the Auto King Portmore 12 class. Oliver Villers and Xavia Murray were winners in Pro Modified 11 and Pro Modified 10 respectively. Craig Lue chalked up an easy win Pro Race 9, while Adrian McLymont closed out the winner’s circle with an 8.251 pass in Pro Race 8.
