Top runners highlight Emancipation Day race card
THE Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission Trophy, one of 12 that headlines the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission (BGLC)-sponsored Emancipation Day 12-race programme, will after all be run among Open Allowance horses at Caymanas Park today.
Also among the 12 trophies at stake is the Emancipation Day Trophy for high claiming runners $600,000-$500,000, three-year-olds and upward and native-bred four-year-olds (NW4) going 1,300 metres for a purse of $620,000.
The other races will be run in honour of major contributing individuals of racing through the years at Caymanas Park and departments that are essential to the successful running and management of the racing product.
The programme is well supported, so much so, that the Commissioner’s Cup event had to be divided into sections
In the wake of the settlement between the stakeholders and Caymanas Track Limited (CTL), one of the largest fields to compete in Open Allowance for some time, will go to post in the 1,100-metre jaunt for the accepted purse of $1 million. Post time for the BGCL feature is scheduled at approximately 5:50 pm with first post at 12:10 pm.
The Wayne DaCosta-trained imported chestnut gelding, son of Keyed Entry, Fortuneonehunderd, will headline a decent field of 11 that also includes recent winners stablemate Rio Cobre, Traditional Prince, Scoopjordyne and Western Rose, along with seasoned Open Allowance campaigners, Talented Tony K, Edison and Janiboutice. Also making her debut against seasoned campaigners for the first time since winning the Jamaica 1,000 Guineas in April is Puddy Pooh. Trained by Richard Azan along with stablemates Edison and Janiboutice, Puddy Pooh has not been visibly hard trained, but has done enough preparation to be in good enough shape not to just make up numbers.
Fortuneonehundred, who takes a step down to compete, should have the beating of this group of horses despite toting top weight of 57.0kg along with Traditional Prince, who scored his most recent win over the course at this level.
Stablemate Rio Cobre is ideally drawn on the outside, and with only a feather of 49.0kg to carry for the claiming apprentice Arayne Sewell, could change his running style and close rapidly for his piece of the action late in the event with Talented Tony K expected to have his merry way on the headline.
Puddy Pooh, who is also bred for speed, could also come calling after settling down for the 400-metre drive with Shane Ellis called upon to partner the three-year-old Classic winning filly.
Phineas, the mount of Jevvanne Erwin, is having a very successful season and has won two races in quick succession: one over the distance in a sparkling time of 1:05.2 seconds at the lower level and most recently at 1,400 metres at this level in a time of 1:24.4 seconds.
The Andrew McDonald prepared six-year-old dark bay/brown gelded son of Distorted must be a threat for all and sundry. Nonetheless, Fortuneonehunderd, with title-chasing jockey Robert Halledeen in the tag, has the beating of this group of runners over this snappy distance of 1,100 metres.
