Fraser-Pryce to defend 100m, 200m titles in Beijing
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jamaica’s sprint queen Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will indeed defend both the 100m and 200m at the Beijing World Championship in China.Jamaica’s team for Beijing
Fraser-Pryce had earlier this year indicated that she would not be defending her 200m title, but following a change of mind by her MVP coach Stephen Francis, she will line up alongside Elaine Thompson, Veronica Campbell-Brown and Sherone Simpson as Jamaica’s four entrants.
So, the ‘Pocket Rocket’ will have a chance of repeating her remarkable treble gold-winning performance in the 100m, 200m and the 4x100m relay.
Jamica’s promising 200m champion, Thompson, a training partner of Fraser-Pryce, was included in the relay pool for the 4×100 after skipping the 100m at the National Senior Championship.
Thompson, 23, with four sub-11 clockings, including a personal best of 10.84 seconds, will give Jamaica that added firepower in the relay alongside Fraser-Pryce, Campbell-Brown, Natasha Morrison, and Simpson.
Newcomer Aisha Praught who switched allegiance from the USA to Jamaica, is entered for both the 1500 and steeplechase events.
Meanwhile, an interesting situation has developed in the men’s 200m with the inclusion of Rasheed Dwyer, who finished fifth at Jamaica’s Trials but has since recorded the second fastest time of the year with 19.80 seconds.
Dwyer is the fifth person named to the 200m alongside Bolt, Jamaican champion Nickel Ashmeade, Warren Weir, and Julian Forte. Only four can run at the Championship so it’s intriguing to see who will be left out or whether Bolt will decide against running the event based on what transpires in the 100m.
Kemoy Campbell is down for the 5000m while there will be three discus throwers in Fredrick Dacres, Jason Morgan and Chad Wright.
The emerging Omar McLeod will line Jamaica’s charge in the men’s 110 hurdles along with Hansle Parchment and Andrew Riley.
